The profound meaning of this painting is entirely concentrated in the central Gurmukhi inscription: “ਇਹ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਜਗਿ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਪਾਇਆ” which translates to “This insignia/mark/standard was found in the world by the grace (or sight) of Guru Nanak.” This inscription serves as the spiritual thesis of the entire artwork, acting as a divine title for all the historical and symbolic vignettes surrounding it. It states unequivocally that the entire tradition—the distinct Sikh identity, the warrior spirit, the tenets of faith, and the ethical path (collectively referred to as the 'Nishana' or 'Standard')—is not a human invention but a direct gift or blessing bestowed upon the world through the divine vision and compassion (nadarī) of the first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Essentially, the painting asserts that everything depicted, from the creation of the Khalsa to the defense of righteousness, flows from and is ultimately sanctioned by the original spiritual revelation of Guru Nanak.
